BELMONTE
A place as old as Portugal
Since 1500 is so famous in Brazil as in Portugal.
Granted a Charter in 1199 and located on the panoramic Esperança Hills (formerly known as Crestados Hills), Belmonte has been equally famous in Brazil and Portugal since 1500. Built on the highest hill in the late 12th century, the Belmonte Castle formed, together with the Sortelha Castle and the Vila de Touro Castle, the Alto Côa defensive line, backed by the natural wall formed by Serra da Estrela and the Zêzere Valley, until the signature of the Treaty of Alcanices (1297).
